Definitions
Team Scramble: On each hole, each member of the team may hit a tee shot. The team then selects one of the tee shots from which to play. All members of the team then hit from that position. This procedure is repeated until the ball is holed.

Best Ball: Each team member plays individual stroke play. When all team members have holed out the team puts the lowest score of the 4 team members on the card as the team score.

Alternate Shot: Usually played as a two-man team with both players playing the same ball. One player tees off the second shot is hot by his partner and the players continue to alternate until the ball is holed out.

Single Elimination Match Play: In match play the game is played by holes. A hole is won by the side which holes its ball in the fewer net strokes. A hole is halved if each side holes out in the same number of net strokes. The match is won by the side which is leading by a number of holes greater than the number of holes remaining to be played. The winner of the match continues on to play another match, his opponent is eliminated.

Stroke Play: Each player plays his own ball from tee to green under USGA rules counting each stroke until the ball is holed out.

Flag Tournament: Players are given a flag with their names attached to a flagstick. Using 100% of the player’s handicap, each player plays until they have used their quota of strokes equaling par plus their handicap. The flag is planted after the player reaches his/her quota for strokes. (Example: a person with a course handicap of 16 would place their flag where their ball lies after their 86th shot, par 70 plus the players 16 stroke handicap).

Shotgun Start: All Players are assigned a starting hole which will be their first hole played. Players all start at the same time so play is completed by all players at the same time.

Flighted: After play is completed players are grouped together by lowest to highest scores in groups of 7 to 12 depending on participation and scores. The more players there are the more flights there will be.

USGA Handicap: Handicaps are a way to level the playing field so that golfers of all abilities can compete against each other. Players enter their scores into a handicapping computer at the golf course after 5 scores are entered the players handicap is calculated by the USGA. This service is available in your local golf club for around $25 a season.

Gross Scores: The actual number of strokes it took to play a round of golf.

Net Scores: The net score is the gross score minus a player’s handicap
